The GPA formula
GPA is a weighted average. Each grade is converted to points, multiplied by the course credits, and the total is divided by the total credits.
Example on the 4.0 scale: A in a 3-credit course (12 points), B in a 3-credit course (9 points) and C+ in a 4-credit course (9.2 points). Total points 30.2 ÷ 10 credits = 3.02.
4.0 scale grade points
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B- | 2.7 | D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 | ||
Some universities do not use plus or minus grades, or give A+ a value above 4.0. If your university’s scale is different, follow its official table.
How cumulative GPA works
Your cumulative GPA combines every semester, weighted by credits. Multiply your previous GPA by your previous credits, add this semester’s quality points, then divide by all credits together. This is why one great semester moves the cumulative GPA a lot in your first year and much less in your final year.
