How to use it

  1. Find the line that matches your question.
  2. Type your numbers into the boxes. The answer appears on the right straight away.
  3. All four lines work at the same time, so you can check several things without clearing anything.

The four formulas

1. What is X% of Y?

result = X ÷ 100 × Y

Example: a 15% tip on a 200 bill is 15 ÷ 100 × 200 = 30.

2. X is what percent of Y?

percent = X ÷ Y × 100

Example: you scored 42 out of 50 in a test. 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

3. Percentage change from X to Y

change = (Y − X) ÷ |X| × 100

Example: your rent goes from 4,000 to 4,400. (4,400 − 4,000) ÷ 4,000 × 100 = +10%. A negative result means a decrease.

4. Increase or decrease Y by X%

increased = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100)
decreased = Y × (1 − X ÷ 100)

Example: a 250 item with 5% VAT costs 250 × 1.05 = 262.50. With a 20% discount it costs 250 × 0.80 = 200.

Common trap: a 20% rise followed by a 20% fall does not bring you back to the start. 100 → 120 → 96. Percentages always apply to the current value, not the original one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 25% of 80 is 0.25 × 80 = 20.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the price by 1 plus the VAT rate. In Saudi Arabia, a price of 115 including 15% VAT is 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 before VAT.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

If a rate moves from 10% to 12%, it rose by 2 percentage points, which is a 20% increase in the rate itself.

Can I calculate a discount?

Yes. Use the last line: enter the price and the discount percent and read the “after decrease” value.
