What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?

The Hijri calendar is lunar. Every month begins with a new moon, so a Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and the two Eids arrive roughly 11 days earlier each year.

Umm al-Qura is the calculated form of the Hijri calendar that Saudi Arabia uses for official business. Rather than waiting for the crescent to be sighted, it relies on astronomical calculation, so dates are fixed years in advance. This converter uses the same Umm al-Qura data that ships with modern browsers, which means the result lines up with dates you see on Saudi government services, residency permits and official letters.

Good to know: some countries begin each month by local moon sighting, so religious dates such as the first of Ramadan can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day. For paperwork in Saudi Arabia, Umm al-Qura is the reference.

A quick rule of thumb

If you only need a rough idea of the year, these formulas get you close. They are approximations, which is exactly why an exact converter matters for anything official.

Gregorian year ≈ Hijri year × 0.970229 + 621.5643
Hijri year ≈ (Gregorian year − 621.5643) × 1.030684

Example: 1448 × 0.970229 + 621.56 ≈ 2026.5, so most of Hijri year 1448 falls in 2026 and early 2027.

Frequently asked questions

What is today’s Hijri date?

The tool shows today’s date in both calendars at the top, taken automatically from your device’s clock.

Can I use this for official documents?

It follows Umm al-Qura, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, so it matches government dates. For deadlines that carry penalties, confirm with the issuing authority as well.

Why does another website show a date one day off?

Some sites use moon sighting or a simple arithmetic (tabular) Hijri calendar. A difference of one day between methods is normal.

Which years are supported?

Hijri years 1300 to 1600, which covers roughly 1882 to 2174 in the Gregorian calendar.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

Either 29 or 30, never 31. If you type day 30 for a month that only has 29 days, the converter tells you the date does not exist.
