How to calculate your gratuity

  1. Choose the country: UAE or Saudi Arabia.
  2. Enter your salary. In the UAE use your basic salary. In Saudi Arabia use your last full wage, including fixed allowances such as housing.
  3. Add your start date and last working day. In the UAE, add any unpaid leave days. In Saudi Arabia, choose whether you resigned or your contract ended.
  4. Your estimated gratuity appears instantly, with a breakdown of the first five years and the years after.

UAE gratuity rules

Private sector employees in the UAE are covered by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. If you complete at least one year of continuous service, you are entitled to:

  • 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years.
  • 30 days of basic salary for each year after the fifth.
  • Partial years are paid proportionally, and unpaid absence days are not counted as service.
  • The total cannot exceed two years of salary.

Since the law came into force in February 2022, resigning no longer reduces your gratuity, and the old difference between limited and unlimited contracts is gone. The daily wage is usually taken as the monthly basic salary divided by 30.

UAE example

ItemValue
Basic salaryAED 10,000
Daily wage10,000 ÷ 30 = AED 333.33
First 5 years21 × 333.33 × 5 = AED 35,000
Next 2 years30 × 333.33 × 2 = AED 20,000
Total for 7 yearsAED 55,000

Saudi Arabia gratuity rules

Under the Saudi Labor Law, Article 84 sets the basic award and Article 85 covers resignation:

  • Half a month’s wage for each of the first five years.
  • A full month’s wage for each year after that, with partial years prorated.
  • The calculation uses your last wage, which includes basic salary plus regular allowances like housing and transport.

If you resign, you receive a share of that amount based on your length of service:

Service when resigningShare of gratuity
Less than 2 yearsNone
2 to 5 yearsOne third
5 to 10 yearsTwo thirds
10 years or moreFull amount

Example: with a wage of SAR 10,000 and 7 years of service, the full award is (5 × 5,000) + (2 × 10,000) = SAR 45,000. If you resign at that point, you receive two thirds: SAR 30,000.

Important: this calculator gives an estimate for typical private sector contracts. Your contract, unpaid salary, deductions or a different wage definition can change the final figure. For a dispute, check with the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHRE in the UAE, HRSD in Saudi Arabia).
